RAVEN’S BAG OF STARS

There was no light in the world

except in one

large house where a rich

man lived with his daughter. Together

they kept all

the light of the world.

Raven made himself into a small piece

of dirt

and dropped into their

drinking

water.

This made the rich man’s daughter pregnant.

When her child was born it cried and cried.

The child wanted everything in the lodge

but especially the bundle bags on the pegs

of the walls of the rich man’s lodge. The

daughter and her father gave the child

anything it wanted and when it pointed to the

first bag it saw they handed

down a bag of stars.

The child took the bag and flung it

up into the air and the

bag sailed out

the smoke

hole

and that is how stars

came into the world.

From the next bag the child flung

the moon

and from the next one

daylight.

Then the spoiled child made Raven speech—

“Ga” it croaked

and then it flew up the

smoke hole

and was

gone

again.
